The United States just passed the largest climate bill in history! The bill dedicates $369 billion to clean energy spending, and is a huge step in reducing the amount of carbon pollution the U.S. puts into the atmosphere. This is worth celebrating, since the U.S. ranks second in the world in carbon pollution, behind China.

A few of the things the bill will do:

  • Save consumers $170 - $220 in electricity costs each year, amounting to billions in savings for Americans over the next decade

  • Give thousands in tax credits to people who buy electric cars, solar panels, wind turbines, and make other renewable energy upgrades

  • Cut greenhouse gas emissions by 42% from 2005 levels

The new bill also addresses health care and inflation and is called the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022. But it lays out what's next for the U.S. in terms of decarbonizing and shows the country's commitment to fighting climate change. Many environmentalists hope it is a turning point. It might even encourage other countries to take bigger steps towards creating a cleaner, greener planet.
