When writing a book about the environment, there's no better title to lift your spirits than The Book of Hope. Especially when that book is written by one of the most devoted environmental activists of the last century, Jane Goodall. "If we all lose hope, we're doomed," Goodall says, adding that we have a lot of work to do, but if we are committed, there is reason to be optimistic. I'm heading to our local bookstore soon to get a copy and plan to post a book review in the spring, but for those interested in her words of wisdom I wanted to share this interview. Speaking to NPR's Rachel Martin, Goodall suggests we rethink the old mantra of "Think globally, act locally."
"Everyday we're bombarded with bad news, socially, politically, environmentally," Goodall says. Looking at news from around world can be overwhelming and leave us feeling hopeless. Jane suggests we think and act locally and let our actions inspire others in our community to also do something good for the planet. The more of us who pitch in, the more hopeful we can be. "Roll up your sleeves and do it!" Jane says.
