Every day on this planet 80,000 acres of trees are cut down, according to One Tree Planted. That's an area five and a half times the size of Manhattan. That means an area almost 3/4 the size of Rhode Island is cut down every week! The Trillion Tree Campaign has stated that half of the worlds trees are now gone. Is there anything we can we do about this?
There are a number of organizations around the world that fight to protect the earth's green spaces, like The Nature Conservancy and the National Parks Conservation Association. Being aware of how you treat the environment when you're in the wilderness, like staying on designated hiking trails, and making sure you don't do anything that increase fire danger, or putting out a camp fire.
There is another simple thing we can do. PLANT MORE TREES! Imagine if you planted 10 trees a year your entire life. By the time you're a grandparent, you would have planted hundreds and hundreds of trees. If you live in a city, or don't have the time to plant trees yourself, there are several great organizations that will plant them for you. Even a small donation can make a big difference!
