I love it when you randomly meet someone who leaves you feeling inspired and hopeful. I am visiting my grandparents in Florida, and just the other day I was introduced to a man who is working on a design for a hydroelectric power system that would be placed 2-miles off the coast and generate power from the Gulf Stream.

The Gulf Stream can be a source of clean energy

The Gulf Stream is a current in the Atlantic Ocean. It flows north from the Caribbean along the eastern North American coast and across the Atlantic toward northern Europe. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the average speed of the Gulf Stream is just over 4 miles per hour, and the speed is higher near the surface. This is the fastest flowing current on earth and can be used to create renewable energy.

When I mentioned my blog, the gentleman sent us a link to a program from Florida Power & Light called 35 Mules, which grants money to business people who are developing big ideas that will create more clean energy from nature and help move us completely away from carbon polluting sources. If you have an idea for clean energy, or if you're just curious about what they are doing, be sure to check out the program.

Meeting people who are working on solutions, and learning about projects like 35 Mules was a reminder that things are happening that could be game changers for our planet. It inspires me to do my part and think bigger. When our conversation was over, I was hopeful that we are actually on our way to having a cleaner greener planet!
