There are so many ways to do good for the planet, but we thought we’d start by suggesting 3 very simple things we should all take into consideration every day. By just keeping these things in mind you can help reduce your impact on the environment.
1. Avoid purchase of single-use plastics

A United Nations study has warned that by 2050 there will be more plastic in the oceans than fish. Have you seen pictures of the Pacific Garbage Patch? It's a swirling patch of garbage twice the size of Texas, made up mostly of plastics. Gross, right? There are efforts to clean it up, but it will be a massive undertaking. So let's not make it worse. Avoid single use plastic bags, bottles, straws, and other disposable items. It can be hard to completely avoid plastics, but there are many great alternatives, such as metal, bamboo, silicone, or reusable cups, bottles and straws.
2. Reduce how much water you use each day
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the average American family uses 300 gallons of water per day. In drought stricken areas like the Southwest, Americans excessive use of water is literally draining rivers and lakes dry. While the majority of fresh water is used for agriculture, individuals can still make an impact. Try cutting your shower time by 1/3 or even 1/2. Turn the sink off when you brush your teeth. Wear your clothes more than once to cut down on washing. It all counts, so just do your best and you will make a positive impact.
3. Reduce, reuse, and recycle
Let's face it, there are times when you just can't avoid a single-use plastic or using more water than you want to. But if you have a conservation mindset, you can make up for it. First, make sure to appropriately recycle whatever plastic you use, and cut water use elsewhere to offset your overall usage. Take a glass or metal bottle with you for all beverages, be it coffee, tea, sodas or a refill of water. Decline plastic silverware when you get take out. And say no to the plastic straw. There are also many fun ways to repurpose these things. Reuse plastic baggies or water bottles, again and again, and when the time is right, make sure they are disposed of or recycled appropriately.
It may not seem like much, but as more of us do our part, the impact becomes significant. Imagine if 100 people did this, or 100,000 or 100 million! But even if one person decides to change their habits, it makes a difference.
